Patna: Coming from a small town like Bakhtiyarpur, Nitish Kumar did his schooling from his village after completing his inter .He moved to Patna from Patna Science College and later got a Mechanical Engineering degree from Patna Engineering College. He has earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Bihar College of Engineering (now NIT Patna) in 1972. He got a job in Electricity Board but he did not like this and he got engaged in social engineering work.
Contested from Harnaut for the first time
Nitish Kumar contested from Harnaut for the first time on a Janata Party ticket in 1977. He then got 31.66 percent votes and lost the election to Independent candidate Bhola Singh. After this, there was a re-election in 1980, then Nitish again came to the ground and lost again. Even after losing two elections, he did not lose courage and contested the 1985 election as a Lok Dal candidate. This time he won the election with a margin of heavy votes.
